Though it is well-known that abortion is a rather common experience, it is still incredibly difficult to find works dealing with it.
Night of the Silent Cicada and Other Nocturnal Musings (2021 - 2023) recounts a family's tormenting decision to give up a pregnancy with a genetic anomaly. Spoken through the voice of a woman with her second pregnancy going awry, it reveals how the family life is inexplicably shaped by wildly contradicting forces like birth, death, grief and hope. It also delves into multiple layers of invisibility a woman faces in her abortion experience - from the burden of the choice, the procedure performed on her body and to the disenfranchised grief afterwards.
The works brings together collaboratively created family portraits that depict the psychological backdrop of a difficult decision along with selective readings from "Practical Obstetrics" published in 1895 - mainly written from and for a male gaze - which through interventions becomes an accomplice in speaking truth of women's lived experiences. In the context of the recent backlash against reproductive rights, the Silent Cicada was born out of a wish to tell an intimate story that provides solace and validation for those who might need it.
